Embark on a voyage of learning

Celebrating over 65 years of bringing the world together

History & Timeline

We may have changed locations many times, but our school remains as friendly and warm as when it first opened in 1957.

From our first location in Timberlake House located on Hamburg’s picturesque Alster lake to our current state-of-the-art facility located at Hemmingstedter Weg in the beautiful suburb of Gross Flottbek, the International School of Hamburg has become an integral part of the community and of the surrounding city, fostering and maintaining close ties with both businesses and the community at large.

One key to our long-term success is that we hold on to good traditions, don’t forget the learnings of the past, yet still embrace all that is new – as long as it improves the well being and education of our students.

ISH cherishes its alumni and keeps them close. Golden plaques commemorate those who graduated, reunion events bring them back together and annual yearbooks ensure that their fond memories can be refreshed anytime and no matter which continent they are currently on.

The "History of ISH" project involved approximately 10 students who created this interactive timeline about the history of school. Main source of information were our well-kept yearbooks dating back to our first years as well as archived press articles.
