Embark on a voyage of learning

Farewell to the Class of 2019

On the 7th of June, ISH held its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2019 in the beautifully decorated Aula. It was a joyous day devoted to celebrating the achievements of the graduates in the company of their teachers, friends, and parents. Upon receiving their diplomas, the graduates officially made the transition from students to alumni/ae. Above all, the ceremony signified exciting new beginnings.

Head of the Humanities Department Mr Richard Dove was chosen by the graduating class to address the gathering. He was joined by the Chair of the ISH Board Mr Sven Herlyn, Head of School Mr Andrew Cross, Secondary School Principal Dr. Howard de Leeuw and the class speakers Sarah and Moritz. They encouraged and challenged the graduates with their combination of insights, humour and advice.

In his speech, Mr Dove applauded the students and proceeded to give them a few words of advice in a lighthearted manner. His theme of ‘Choice’ began with his high school experience and went on to explain how personal commitment is needed to underpin the choices we make in life. “It is easier to be swayed by the mob and the demagogue, but you must be true to yourself and make choices based on your core values.” He ended his speech on a humorous note by encouraging the students to think of what grandma would do before making important decisions.

Awards were presented to acknowledge the accomplishments of the outgoing students. The ISH PTA Citizenship Award was presented to Andrew who has been an active member of the ISH community, demonstrated good leadership qualities and lived the values of respect and tolerance as defined in the school’s mission. The ECIS Award for International Understanding was awarded to Timothy Bartlett who met all the criteria for this award: he has been a good representative of his country, is able to converse in at least two languages, has been a contributing force in the life of the school, and has shown the ability to bring different people together in a sense of community. Last but certainly not least, the Brett Walker Award for Sportsmanship was handed out to Sarah for her embodiment of dedication, determination and good sportsmanship during the school year. Congratulations to all the recipients, who also demonstrated active involvement in the ISH community, good leadership qualities and presented themselves as valuable role models for their school community. Subject awards were also presented to students to celebrate their outstanding achievement in a particular subject.

As we bid farewell to the Class of 2019, we encourage you to always see yourselves as ambassadors of ISH and we wish you the best for the future. As we all know, school life has its fair share of ups and downs that have shaped you into the person you are today. We hope that you are proud of your journey and that you have also made some lasting memories during your time at ISH. Cheers!!!
