Embark on a voyage of learning

Ruckus in the Garden by David Farr

This year’s Spring Play, Ruckus in the Garden written by David Farr was a humorous story appropriate to young people as it relates to their young and energetic character traits that come to loggerheads at times and at other times are in unison through mystical transformations.

As the name suggests, the play is based on William Shakespeare’s, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and is set in a beautiful garden with statues who come to life and chant their magic on the unsuspecting teenagers. What follows is a series of misunderstandings and romantic complications that send our young heroes into increasingly absurd and even comedic situations.

The play centers around two distinct schools, Riverdale Comprehensive School and St. Nectan’s Grant-Maintained Secondary School, and explores the animosity between the two, especially dealing with social and emotional expectations, anxieties, insecurities and lack of respect and how these are perpetuated through the inequalities experienced between schooling standards. The audience quickly learns how this context can breed insecurity, self-loathing and tension. In the end all is well.

Once again the Performing Arts Department headed by Mr. Graham kept up with its brilliant record of putting up a fantastic show. Mr. Soares Da Cunha directed the actors and actresses from Grade 6 to 12 with the assistance of Mr. Hobbins. The students clearly demonstrated their passion for theatre exhibiting a will to learn, to push boundaries and a full commitment to their assigned roles.
