Farewell to Mr. Michiel de Beer

International School of Hamburg bids farewell to Mr. Michiel De Beer

Mr. Michiel De Beer, Music Director

Mr. De Beer was the first head of Performing and Visual Arts department here at ISH, and under his leadership the department grew in scope and importance. He developed a vision of the place of music in the school curriculum which has allowed young artists to grow in skill and confidence both vocally and instrumentally. For many years, he single-handedly ran the secondary school music classes, teaching all grades from 6 through to 12.

Mr. De Beer has been a leading voice in ensuring that the Arts continue to have a central place in the culture of our school. One legacy that Mr. De Beer leaves behind is the annual ISH musicals, which he initiated way back in 2002. Every year, ISH and friends of the community gather in the Aula to watch spectacular shows complete with wonderful music, colourful costumes and very creatively designed back-stage drops with him as the music director.

Other events like the talent shows, anniversaries and ceremonies many of them requiring vast amounts of time and effort could not have been successful events without his selfless presence of instructing, rehearsing and many times accompanying the performers.

His talents have extended far beyond ISH and, as many people know, he served as the Musical Director on board several cruise ships at different times, training the show ensembles on board ship but, as he noted in his application letter for ISH, his “first love has always been teaching music and attempting to interest pupils in practicing and appreciating music of all sorts and genres.”

Not many international schools are blessed with the long-term presence in their community of a music educator of his calibre and commitment. We bid Mr. Michiel de Beer farewell as he sails off to the sun to enjoy his retirement.
