ISH takes a fresh approach to food
Over the past 18 months, with the students, parents and staff members of the Cafeteria Committee, ISH has been redefining its entire approach to school food. The aim is to nudge our community towards healthier diets, emphasising environmental awareness through food education, reduced sugar intake during the school day and a collaborative, education-first strategy to empower students to make informed, healthier, and more sustainable dietary choices for the well-being of both individuals and the planet.
School food is a hot topic, especially in an international school with diverse food cultures. The prevalence of ultra-processed convenience foods and the need for sustainable diets add to the debate.
We are excited to partner with Katerine GmbH, a local caterer experienced in boarding schools, to address the dietary needs of young learners.
Key Changes:
-
New Menu Options: Introducing vegan, vegetarian, and flexitarian options with seasonal, organic, locally produced vegetables and fruits, and a salad bar.
-
Encouraging Exploration: Students are encouraged to try new foods and adjust their servings to limit waste.
-
Limiting Sugary Foods: We have removed sodas and chocolate-topped donuts, limiting sugary and ultra-processed foods until after school hours.
Supported by our certified nutritionist and the willingness of our students, we aim to equip them to make sustainable dietary choices. Students can choose from flexitarian, vegetarian, and vegan hot lunch options, and are encouraged to “take what you eat, eat what you take” to reduce food waste.
By embracing an ISH (Inquiring, Sustainable, Holistic) approach to food, we believe our school can play a pivotal role in shaping a healthier, more sustainable future for our learners and our planet.
