We want to make your application process to ISH as smooth as possible.

There are three steps for Online Admissions detailed below.

Please note that this online process is only for new applicants and not for re-enrollment purposes.

 

 

Enrollment Procedure

Step 1: Apply Online
 

Applications to ISH are submitted online. You will be asked to complete our Pre-Application after which an account will be created for you to continue the application in our Admission Portal. In this portal you can clearly see all the steps that you need to complete:

  • Student Questionnaire: For this section you will need you child's passport information as well as previous school information.
  • Demographic Information: More details about your family, such as parents, siblings, relatives and employer information.
  • Health Form: Your child's medical needs and conditions such as allergies or medical- or food intolerances.
  • Immunization Records: Due to German law, all families are required to provide proof of two measles vaccinations before the student can attend school.
  • Learning Support Form: This form is provided by the ISH Student Special Service Team and will record your child's learning support needs and conditions. You will be required to fill in this form even if you child does not need any of the Student Special Services. For students with diagnosed learning support or special education needs, we will need you to upload psycho-educational reports and IÖPs/IEPs (and English translations where applicable).
  • Application Photo: We would like you to upload a clear photo of your child.
  • Payment of Application Fee: The application fee is 500€ per child and is required in order for us to process your application.
  • Past report cards: In this step, we would like to see your child's report cards of the last two years. An official transcript from the previous school will be required for all students joining in or after Grade 9.
  • Passport: Please upload a scan or a legible photo of your child's primary passport. If you child doesn't have a passport please use another official ID.
  • Teacher Recommendation: A current teacher must complete a confidential recommendation form online. You will be able to enter the teacher's email address so that an automated email is sent out to the relevant teacher.
  • Placement Tests (Grades 6-12 only): In order for us to determine which language courses are best suited for your child, we are asking that your child complete an English placement test. If living outside of Hamburg, this should be administered by a current teacher, who will then return the results to us. If you live in Hamburg or should it not be possible to administer the test at your current school, we can arrange for the test to be taken at ISH.

Step 2: Admission Decision

As soon as we have the completed Online Application and all the required documents, we send your child’s application to the school principal. The principal and other members of the educational staff/team review the file and make the final decision on acceptance. We then inform you of the decision via an official email and if your child has been accepted, you will be asked to confirm our offer of acceptance through our Online Enrollment process. 

Please note that applications for learning support, financial aid, or those involving special circumstances may take longer. Feel free to contact us at any time if you have questions about your child(ren)’s status in the admissions process.

Step 3: Preparing for School

Once you have confirmed acceptance for your child(ren), we will be in touch about everything you need to know for your first day at ISH.

Admission to the the International School of Hamburg is open to all students who can profit from international education in English in Hamburg. The school cannot admit students who: 

  • require a self-contained program of special education separate from the mainstream;
  • cannot cope with the physical limitations of the building;
  • have a poor previous scholastic or behavioural record. 

In the event of a waiting list being necessary, qualified applicants will be admitted on a "first come, first served" basis, giving due consideration to alternative choices of schools available in Hamburg and the international background of the family. Priority will be given to international students who would be unable to cope in the local German school system, and whose parents are on international assignment in Hamburg for a limited time.
