At ISH, our vision is to cultivate aware, capable, and confident global citizens who are empowered to tackle the pressing challenges of the 21st century. Among these challenges, climate change stands as one of the most urgent.

For decades, ISH students have taken the lead on ecological initiatives throughout the school. In 2022, we amplified these efforts with a school-wide commitment to sustainability. Spearheaded by a passionate team of students, parents, alumni, and staff, the Let’s Green ISH initiative is at the heart of our mission to make a meaningful ecological impact within our community.

Our Goals

Lead by Example: Demonstrate environmental responsibility by reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing our sustainability practices.
Eco-Certification: We proudly achieved recognition as a certified Eco School, Umweltschule Europa, in July 2025.
Promote Biodiversity and reduce our waste footprint: Support local biodiversity and prioritize waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.

Our Environmental Sustainability Projects

Since 2022, GreenISH students have conducted an annual Sustainability Audit to assess the school’s environmental and social impact. This student-led initiative not only helps identify areas for improvement but also celebrates what the school and community are doing well. The 2022–23 students' audit revealed that waste management and its effects on local biodiversity were among the most urgent concerns. As a result, these became the focus of our 2023–2025 Eco-School project.

We are proud to share that in July 2025, our commitment was formally recognized with official accreditation from the Hamburg government and the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing our sustainability journey.

Promoting Biodiversity : Our Birds & Bees project

At ISH, fostering a connection with nature and environmental responsibility begins with observation, education and action. Here’s how our students are making a difference since 2023:

Birds: Learning, Building, and Protecting

Junior School Bird Studies: Each Early Years and Junior School grade has been assigned a local bird species to study. Students explore their bird’s habitat, behaviours, and needs, then share their findings with the school and wider community.
Grade 9 Bird Box Project: In collaboration with Grade 9 Design students, custom bird boxes are being crafted for local species that need nesting support. These boxes, made from repurposed materials, embody our commitment to reducing, reusing, and recycling. Each box is tailored to its species and presented to Junior School students, fostering cross-grade learning and environmental awareness.
Birdwatching and Cleanup: Students and their families participate in birdwatching activities using the National Geographic Seek app and share their observations through exhibitions and presentations. Additionally, during Hamburg Raum Auf weeks in March, our community helps protect bird habitats by collecting litter in nearby wooded areas.

Bees: Supporting Local Pollinators

On-Campus Beehives: In June 2023, two bee colonies were introduced to our school grounds as part of a new initiative in partnership with PLACE4BEES, a Hamburg-based company. Students and staff learn directly from our school beekeepers about the vital role of bees in local ecosystems.
Bee-Friendly Actions: Our Nature Club has planted pollinator-friendly plants to support the bee colonies and provide a habitat for other beneficial insects.

Hands-On Environmental Initiatives

As part of our vibrant after-school program, students across all age groups engage in projects to enhance biodiversity on campus:

Nature Club: Building insect hotels, bird feeders, and planting pollinator-friendly flora.
Ceramics Club: Crafting bird baths to support local wildlife.
Kindness Club: Learning how to care for injured birds and protect local species.
Art Club: Exploring bird species through creative projects tied to classroom studies.

Through these initiatives and many more, ISH students are developing practical skills, environmental knowledge, and a deep sense of stewardship for the natural world.

Waste: Do It Right: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Our School’s Waste Reduction and Sustainability Initiative

At ISH, we are committed to building a more sustainable future by addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges: waste management. This project empowers students and staff to understand the impact of the waste they generate—both individually and as a school community—and equips them with the tools and knowledge to take meaningful action to reduce their waste footprint.

What We’ve Achieved

Minimizing Waste Generation

Reduction in Garbage Bins: By reducing the number of garbage bins to one per floor, we’ve fostered greater awareness about waste disposal and encouraged more thoughtful waste management practices.

Improved Waste Management Systems

Waste Separation System: Dedicated stations in classrooms, corridors, and the cafeteria now enable the separation of plastics, metals, paper, glass, and batteries, leading to more efficient recycling and waste processing.
Cafeteria Waste Separation: Waste separation stations in the cafeteria have not only improved recycling but also raised awareness about food waste, encouraging smarter portioning and consumption habits.

Banning Single-Use Plastics

Eliminating Plastic Bottles: A school-wide ban on single-use plastics, including bottles, has significantly reduced plastic consumption and waste in our community.

Environmental Policy in Action

Event Waste Management: Waste separation stations are now a standard at community events, reinforcing the importance of proper waste management and aligning with our broader sustainability goals.

Raising Awareness Through Engagement

Student-Led Campaigns: Initiatives like the Grade 5 River Project have highlighted the importance of waste disposal and sustainable consumption, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility.

Through these collective efforts, ISH is creating a culture of sustainability that empowers students, staff and the wider school community to reduce their waste footprint. This initiative reflects our commitment to instilling environmental values and equipping our community with practical ways to contribute to a healthier planet

Meet Our Bees

ISH is proud to host two bee colonies on campus. Surrounded by green and the extraordinary plant diversity of the botanical garden next door, our school is a place of choice to keep bees and yield quality honey.

Bees play a crucial role in pollination and the overall health of our ecosystems. Partnering with Place4bees, a Hamburg company dedicated to bee conservation, is a wonderful way to provide our students with hands-on experiences to appreciate their importance.

By establishing and managing two bee colonies at ISH, the students learn about bees' vital role in our ecosystems and gain a deeper understanding of how they are impacted by human activities while actively contributing to their preservation.

Additionally, the initiative aligns with our waste management goals, as beekeeping can contribute to reducing food waste through the conversion of excess honey (40kg per year) and beeswax production. Beekeeping also provides opportunities for learning about wider sustainable practices, such as organic gardening and the importance of a healthy environment.

Finally, since our community of learners extends beyond the students, our staff and other community members are also invited to participate in a beekeeping course starting each January.
